It occured to me some days ago: Why doesn't have Eve something like achievements. Eve is already very heavily based on stats, why not have quantified stats on what you have done (and then maybe show that off if you like (could work like the certificates showing)). Even if you couldn't show them it would be very interesting to see and have measured what you have done. Ever wondered how many m3 of minerals you have mined in your live? How many NPCs you have killed, how many missions flown? Also having achievements would help the people that have problems with Eve having no obvious goals. They could at least try to get their achievements as high as possible.
Eve seems to be super-suited for achievements. Here some things that immediatelly occur to you:
- Volume of ore mined (perhaps two achievements for low- and high-level ore
- Number of Jumps made
- Percent of Systems in the Galaxy visited
- Volume of goods transported
- Number of Modules salvaged
- Number of NPC ships killed (Maybe split up by tier)
- Number of Player ships killed (Maybe split up by tier)
- Number of Scanprobes used
- Number of Signatures found with scanprobes
- Number of combat missions completed
- Number of transport missions completed
- Number of storyline missions completed
- Percent of COSMOS missions completed
- Number of Loyalty Points gained
- Number of Research Points gained
- Number of Research Points spent
- Times of Products produced
- Times of Inventions/Research (split up by type)
- Volume of Products recycled
- Times of successful hacking
- Times of successful archeology
- Number of Market Trades
- Volume of Market Trades
- Number of Contracts used
- Volume of Contracts
- Number of Certificates gained
- Number of skills known
- Number of skill levels learned
- Number of achievements achieved
- Many more...
You could make it so that an achivement has multiple levels (The devs seem to like the number 5 ;) and needs an initial volume/number/percentage to show at all (so that you only see that there is an achievement once you have done something in that direction and don't get overwhelmed from the beginning on). And obviously achivements (should there be a large number of them) should get somewhat grouped.
Pros:
- Motivation for new players
- Motivation for older players
- Promotes trying of different aspects of Eve that a player hasn't tried out before
- Fits nicely into stats-heavy Eve
- Additional bragging rights
- Can be used regardeless of highsec/lowsec (carebaers rejoice)
- Provides (additional) long-time motivation
- Probably relatively easy to implement
- One thing more in Eve to do
Cons:
- Types of achievements would have to be determined by CCP which does not fit well with a player-driven world
- For most things no backward data availability(everybody would start from zero)
- One thing more in Eve to do

Highest of this, most of that, total number of these.
No real reason to have it, mostly just to see the numbers
Well no real reason to play a game anyways, but we still do ;)

Originally by: Lady ISK If you want achievements go back to the WoW you play
I only played WOW during it's Beta (and it sucked) and it surely didn't have any achievements or anything similar to what I have proposed here.

the devs have much better things to do then code achievements. i would get the vast majority of them instantly, and never see any mention of them again.
Did you even read the post? With a very few (debatable) exceptions you wouldn't get ANYTHING instantly.

you must understand, you could train for TWO DECADES real time and not have all the skills in the game to lvl V. on that time frame, no matter how many achievements you put in, they will mean nothing. everyone will get all of them, sooner or later.
Achievements have basically NOTHING to do with reaching certain skills (that would be the certificates) it has to do with reaching certain goals in-game. I know lots of people from the beginning of Eve that have never really used Scanprobes, that never did the COSMOS missions, that haven't ever used hacking or archeology (of course some would have the skills, but they don't). Some of them don't manufacture at all and so on and so forth...

Originally by: Joe Starbreaker Does "achievements" mean you get like an award after mining your first billion units of veldspar? That, I would reject. The idea of being able to see the statistic, though, I think is fine and I like it. Let me set my own goals and make my own comparisons, but sure, let me see the stats.
Well currently it's just an idea. I could see at least three options for that part:
- Just give you the stats but no other function
- Give out titles based on the stats that you reach with defined values (thats what you wrote)
- Give out titles based on your stats in comparison to the other players in the world (Titles for the "best" people in the respective categoty, indirect competitive aspect)
In fact I personally would prefer a mixture of 2 and 3. So assuming that there would be an achievement for mining common ore: You would get a value that shows you how much m3 of common ore you already mined. Once you have reached (numbers made up) 1 billion m3 you receive a title like "Basic common ore miner", if you reach 100 billion m3 you get "Experienced common ore miner" after that you have to "compete" with other people on the server. To get the title "Top common ore miner" you would have to be Top-10% in the galaxy and to get "King of the common ore miners" you need to be the single highest rank in the universe.

I'd make an assumption that 95% of EVE players don't really care about their lifetime stats, short of DPS or income per hour or so.
IMO there would be quite a few people interested in that. Granted there won't be 100% of the server population using that feature, but I assume it would be at least 50% (I'd also assume that it might be slightly more intersting for carebaers).
